Journalist Support Committee (JSC) and UNESCO discuss ways of joint cooperation to assist journalists

On Tuesday, Sep, 24, Chairman of JSC in Palestine, Mr. Saleh al-Masri, met with Mrs. Hala Tannous, Executive Assistant and Communication and Information focal point, at the UNESCO Ramallah Office, to discuss ways of cooperation and joint work to assist Palestinian journalists.

Al-Masri reviewed the work of JSC in Palestine, regarding the following 5 areas:

  1. Documentation of the violations committed against Palestinian journalists;
  2. Documentation of the ongoing attacks against journalists reporting the Great March of Return (GMR);
  3. The importance of providing journalists with professional safety equipment;
  4. The need to strengthen the discourse of tolerance and the rejection of hate speech;
  5. The need to end the cycle of impunity and to prosecute crimes against journalists, especially in light of the recurring violations against Palestinian journalists.

Al-Masri commented that the meeting had been constructive as it was agreed to organise joint work to assist, train and develop the Palestinian journalists.

In turn, Mrs. Tannous stressed that UNESCO endeavour to cooperate with institutions concerned with the training and development of journalists. She also underlined that the journalists in the Gaza Strip lack professional safety equipment, in addition to training and awareness in many areas related to the rights of journalists and professional ethics.
